Lyrics

The signs of hatred line the curb
where cries of prejudice are heard,
Our dreams of justice cast aside
like countless other dreams denied.
And though we say we do our part,
our efforts stop with bleeding hearts;
so many sins we can't deny,
we can't deny. . .

If she has her way, hearts won't fail.
Courage makes a change and dreams prevail.

A transformation has begun.
now women lead when others run.
The church will never be the same.
The Holy Spirit is to blame
for troubling waters long asleep,
we pray the world our church to keep,
that God would help us move ahead,
like Jesus said. . .

If she has her way, walls will fall.
Women work with men to welcome all.

The church cannot abide
when hatred dwells inside.
God's arms are open wide.
Love will not be denied.

If she has her way, God's love reigns.
We will make an end of foolish games.

If she has her way, if she has her way,
if she has her way, we'll live in peace.

Inspiration

Molly, my wife, asked me to write a song for her ordination to Christian ministry in July 2001.  She didn't like the first one I wrote (it was a foot-stompin' bluegrass diddy), but she likes this one much better.

Molly's ordination service was held in Kansas City during the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the General Synod of the United Church of Christ.  Outside of the convention center, picketers lined the curb with lewd signs expressing derision of people of gay and lesbian sexual orientation.  These angry people claim to be following God's ways with their hatred and prejudice.  This song is a response to them, a cry for justice in the face of such ill-use of God's name.

It was fitting for Molly's ordination, because she is very committed to justice in every form.  The "she" in the song can be seen either as Molly, but in a much grander sense, God.  For if God has "her" way, the walls separating people from one another  will fall.
